Dolly Parton Imagination Library Available to Residents of Newton County
Newton County Public Library is pleased to be a Champion for the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Dolly Parton wanted children to be excited about books, and to feel the magic that books can create, and chose to mail high-quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes in Tennessee at no cost to them. She wanted to ensure that every child would have books, regardless of the family’s income.
This program became so popular that in 2000 Parton announced that she would make the program available to any community that was willing to partner with her to financially support it locally. Newton County became one of those communities in November of 2017, thanks to the financial support of our Township Trustees and all of the Libraries in Newton County.
Only children living in Newton County are eligible for this program. Once registered, each child receives a book in the mail each month from birth to age 5. The titles vary from new books to classic stories, chosen by a panel of librarians and educators. The first book each child receives is a customized version of “The Little Engine That Could,” and the month each child turns 5 he receives “Look Out, Kindergarten! Here I Come!”
All Public Libraries in Newton County serve as registration points and support points for parents who want to register their children in this program. Parents may register online by clicking on the button shown below.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Newton County Public Library offers 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, an easy and fun reading program. Simply read a book, any book to your newborn, infant or toddler. The goal is to read 1,000 books before your little one starts Kindergarten. (You can repeat favorite books!)
It sounds hard, but if you read ONE book every night that's 365 books a year, 730 books in two years, and 1,095 books in three years!
We are here to help, by offering log sheets to list the books you read to your child or online logging with our Beanstack app, and a new book for every 100-book milestone you and your child reach!
We maintain a photo gallery in each Library for children progressing through the program, and we will post on social media with your permission. A the end of the program when your child begins Kindergarten you will have a photographic record of his or her growth, and your child will have up to 10 books in his or her personal library!
